If you are looking for something to grill beside hamburgers or steaks a great alternative is a Tri tip roast. It is not a popular cut of meat so it can be hard to find but it has a delicious flavor.
Your local Costco usually has it at there meat counter. You can also ask the butcher at your favorite super market to prepare one for you.
Tri tips usually run about 2 to 3 lbs and will make a great meal for 4 to 8 people depending on appetite.
Just like steak or burgers there are a variety of ways to prepare and cook the meat. The following are a few ways I would suggest.
If you like marinated meat then put the tri tip plus your favorite marinate in a large plastic zip lock bag overnight. You can also prepare it just before cooking with your favorite rub, or simply cook it El natural and let everyone season to taste when it is served.
When ready, heat up your grill to a medium high temp. not on high heat back it off just a little.
Cook it like you would cook your steaks on the grill. I like my meat cooked medium so that its pink with maybe just a hint of red in the middle. To do this I cook a 3 lb. tri tip 15 minutes on a side you can adjust your cook time depending on taste from rare to well done . I know it is ready if I push on the meat and it's not squishy. then take it off the grill cover with tin foil and let it rest for about 10 minutes. For best results carve the meat against the grain and thin slices.
Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy.
